Meditation for the Masses

 

Last week we joined 2,000 other mindful New Yorkers at SummerStage Central Park for a 20-minute group meditation, sound bath, and live musical performances hosted by The Big Quiet.

We were so honored to join a bunch of uber-cool wellness brands like Thinx, Sky Ting Yoga, Outdoor Voices, and MNDFL to be featured at the event. We brought along our Tribute booth and captured individual testimonials from attendees who ranged from life-long meditators to first timers checking it out for fun.

Meditation involves more than sitting silently. It involves breathing, listening, acknowledging your thinking and then, letting go. Most importantly meditation is what you make of it, and The Big Quiet offers just that. It’s a you-do-you kind of meditation. So you can count your breaths, lay down, sit up straight, repeat a mantra, whatever brings you peace is good to go (as long as it’s quiet!)

Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard Medical School conducted scientific studies to test the health benefits of meditation and determined that meditation could be used successfully in treating physiological problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease and migraine headaches, as well as autoimmune diseases such as diabetes and arthritis. It’s also known to improve our happiness by up to 25%.

Andrew even got his 15 seconds when he was featured in an article for Well+Good on meditation techniques. This was his tip:

Whether you’re on a train or have some sort of waiting time between two things, just replace the time you would spend on your phone and sit with your eyes closed—just count your breath for whatever that time is. Don’t even think of it as meditation, just allow yourself to be still for those few minutes. You don’t have to make it a big thing but the second you sit and count 10 breaths, that’s all you think about, you’ll understand how it makes you feel. Once you feel it, it’s hard to stop doing it.”
