Gratitude Stories: Isabella’s 19th Birthday

Why did you want to give Isabella a Tribute?

Connie: Giving our daughter a Tribute was so incredibly awesome because this was her very first birthday away from home. Although she is loving life in college and says is not homesick, as a Mom, it was not easy having her so far away on her birthday and I thought that if just in case she did feel a little homesick on her birthday, she might cheer up by watching some video greetings from all the important people in her life!

What is your favorite thing about this person?

Connie (mom): My favorite things about Isabella are that she is just an overall really, really kind person and she has a smile that just lights up every room — especially those who know her or meet her for the first time. She is a very giving and compassionate person and she always tells me she loves me!!

What were the circumstances when they received their Tribute?

Connie: Isabella was in college in her dorm room when she opened up her Tribute!!!!!!

What was their reaction while watching their Tribute?

Connie: I wish I could have seen her reaction but since she watched it a thousand miles away from me, I can only tell you that her immediate text to me read, “Best. Present. Ever!!!!! (Accompanied with a lot of happy emojis). She said she watched it with a friend and then alone so she could digest it all. She said it made her cry!!!! Tears of joy, of course! She marveled at how some of her new college friends participated also, in addition to her high school friends and their birthday wishes for her and their insight into her, including their favorite memories of her, made her so, so HAPPY!!!!! Best. Present. Ever!!!

How did this make you personally feel?

Connie: Like the kids say, “OMG!!!!” — I totally enjoyed hearing the heartfelt messages her old and new friends gave her. For me, it was so joyful to hear how much her friends love her and listen to them recount their favorite memories of her. What was an added bonus was to hear them lovingly and teary-eyed list all her wonderful qualities that make her such a special friend to them. I know how special our daughter is, but it was such a treat to hear her friends put into words how they truly feel about her. These kids were extremely thoughtful in their messages/wishes to her. It made me proud that she associates with such beautiful people and it made me so incredibly happy to hear her be so thankful for this gift. It also delighted me that she had such a happy 19th birthday away from home with new friends but because of Tribute, she also celebrated with family and old friends too! The Tribute videos made her birthday extra special!!

Please ask the Tribute recipient how it made him/her feel to receive their Tribute.

Isabella says it made her so happy! I guess friends don’t always tell each other why exactly they love and appreciate their friendship or what traits/values of theirs are what drew/draws them to her. That made her feel so special but also gave her an opportunity to connect with all on an even deeper level. The video montage also contained some random video messages from kids Isabella has babysat for in the past and from the ladies at her favorite nail salon so she said the overall Tribute was meaningful but also very funny! Again, in her words, she says that receiving this Tribute on her 19th birthday was “THE BEST PRESENT EVER!!!!!”

Gratitude Stories: Norma’s 95th Birthday

As the people we love grow older, it is inevitable that they will lose touch with many of the people who have held a special place in their hearts.

One of the most powerful gifts we can give the elderly is a moment of connection with the friends and family they don’t see often.

We love seeing the children of elderly parents on Tribute. Karl’s Tribute for his 95-year-old mom is a great example of how powerful these videos can be. We hope you enjoy this week’s Gratitude Story!

if you don't have anything nice to say, say it.png

Why did you want to give Norma a Tribute?

Karl (son): She has lost direct touch with many folks who loved & respected her. This was an ideal way for them to speak directly to her, rather than writing their sentiments in a card or letter.

What is your favorite thing about Norma?

Karl: Over the years, she has taught me so much and shared so much wisdom. My favorite thing about her is her Patience.

What were the circumstances when Norma received her Tribute?

In a relaxed, quiet setting on a Sunday afternoon, we played her Tribute on a large screen TV while she sat in a comfortable chair surrounded by her family.

What was their reaction to the Tribute?

She was overcome with emotion, quietly crying several times.

How did this make you personally feel?

Karl: Thankful for the time people took to send a video, and thankful that they could personally speak directly to her heart in this way.

Did Norma have anything to say after watching her Tribute?

Karl: It was so emotional, she was left without words. She managed to utter a few words and phrases: Wonderful – amazing – so loved – thank you.

Gratitude Stories: Gabrielle’s Graduation

Life is made up of milestones, and graduation is one of the biggest. There are few occasions that allow you to consider the growth and development of a human quite like a graduation.

For the graduate, it can be a time of excitement, and also uncertainty. That is one of the reasons why it is so important to fill a young person up with the support of their community. When someone feels like they have a crew of people at their back, they are more likely to believe in their dreams and go for what they want most.

We love seeing family and friend come together to share their appreciation and congratulations for recent grads. Dana’s Tribute for Gabrielle is a great example of how beautiful these graduation Tributes can be. Enjoy this week’s Gratitude Story.

Why did you want to give Gabrielle a Tribute?

Dana (aunt): Because reaching major milestone in one’s life is a moment to celebrate, rejoice and be noticed for the great accomplishment that it is. Receiving a Tribute is a beautiful gift. All too often we neglect to tell the people we love and admire just how special they are. A Tribute video forces you in a the best of ways to dig deep and really express wonderful emotions about your loved one.

Young Gabrielle enjoys the company of her aunt Dana

What is your favorite thing about Gabrielle?

Dana: There are so many things. She is sweet and polite, bright and good natured. Full of love.

What were the circumstances when Gabrielle received her Tribute?

Dana: We were all on a family vacation celebrating Gabrielle’s graduation. On the last night that we had all our family together sitting in the living room of the rented beach house, we played the video.

What was their reaction to the Tribute?

Dana: We laughed and cried and remembered good times together as she was growing up and now as a beautiful young woman about to embark on her adult life.

How did this make you personally feel?

Dana: I was grateful for the opportunity that Tribute afforded me to bring this special gift to her. I was glad I was able to pull it together for her. It was a very emotional experience for all of us to say the least.

Did Gabrielle have anything to say after watching her Tribute?

Dana: She said she loved it and it made her feel loved and good about herself. She felt empowered to take on this next chapter in her life… And she really is.

Gratitude Stories: Frayda’s Bat Mitzvah

The Bat Mizvah is an important right of passage for people of the Jewish faith. It celebrates a young person’s transition from childhood to religious maturity.

It is also a unique opportunity to re-create Madonna choreography in front of all your friends…

But most importantly, it is a time to celebrate who someone is and what they mean to their community.

Bar/Bat Mitvah videos have become ingrained in Jewish culture and we’re so excited to see more people reaching out to use Tribute for these special occasions.

We especially loved Amy’s video for her daughter Fryda. Her grandma is quite possibly the cutest human being we’ve ever seen and we love seeing young people sharing their appreciation and affection so openly.

Why did you want to give Frayda a Tribute?

Amy (mom): I created a Tribute for my son Simon a few months back and I thought it would be a great idea to surprise Frayda with one at her Bat Mitzvah. And what a great idea it was.

Screen Shot 2016-11-10 at 1.19.51 PM.png

Frayda and her parents at a young age

What is your favorite thing about Frayda?

Amy: Frayda is my 13-year-old daughter who is doing so many incredible things already. I love everything about her. She always brightens my life with all of her energy and smiles. She is very theatrical and dramatic which always make for an exciting time around the house.

What were the circumstances when Frayda received her Tribute?

Amy: We decided that we would surprise Frayda with the Tribute during her Bat Mitzvah lunch while 250 of her friends/relatives watched along with her. Everyone at the party was amazed by the quality and warm feeling that covered the room. It was such a special moment.

How did Frayda react to the video?

She was completely surprised and loved hearing all of the positive things people said about her. She cried the whole way through it. It was really special for me to watch all of these beautiful people say such nice things about my daughter. She felt so much love and support which couldn’t have come at a more perfect time as she transitions into her mid-teenage years.

Say Their Names this Veterans Day

Stop what you are doing and consider this for a moment… We will each die twice.

We die for the first time when we take our very last breath, and our heart beats one final time.

We die a second time when someone speaks our name out loud for the very last time.

So, this Veterans day, we are partnering with Wreaths Across America to honor Veterans that gave their lives serving our great country. To show the world and their families that we remember, honor them and most importantly, that we still care.

Who’s service do you wish to remember, honor, and teach about? Tell us their story, and why you care enough to record a video to #SayTheirNames. Together, we will say the names of over one million who served and sacrificed to provide the freedoms we enjoy each and every day.

Gratitude Stories: Beka’s 40th Birthday

A sister is a forever friend. Those of us that are lucky enough to have one, know the joy that comes with the territory. We were so excited when April got in touch and let us know that she needed a one of a kind gift for her big sisters birthday.

Enjoy this week’s love packed gratitude story!

Why did you want to give Beka a Tribute?

April: Beka is a really great gift giver. Her gifts are always thoughtful and meaningful. However, I struggle when I’m buying for her. So when she turned 40 years old this year, my mom, my other sister, and I felt a lot of pressure to find the perfect gift to celebrate the occasion. My mom was traveling and in a magazine on the plane, she stumbled across an ad for Tribute. We knew it would be perfect because, well, let’s be honest, who doesn’t like hearing just how much others love and appreciate you?! I was able to find friends who she hasn’t seen in years! Plus, just having our grandparents on video, retelling their favorite memories of her, was so moving (even for me)!

Beka on the red carpet

What is your favorite thing about Beka?

April (sister): My sister is genuine, loyal, & kind. She’s one of the most generous people I’ve ever known.

What were the circumstances when Beka received her Tribute?

April: We opted to surprise Beka with a Tribute and had it mailed on a USB to her home. I wasn’t there when she watched it, but based on the text message she sent me afterward… Well, it’s pretty self-explanatory (see below). I was so ecstatic and relieved. This was truly the best gift I had ever given.

How did Beka react to the video?

Beka’s text to me: I just finished watching the most amazingly special and INCREDIBLE birthday video………I think I soaked almost a whole box of tissues. This was the MOST SPECIAL thing ever……and the BEST birthday present I could have ever wanted.THANK YOU……THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I love you all so very much, and there aren’t enough words to express how I feel about you. Thank you for your hard work in getting this done. You included so many special people to be on the video. I am overwhelmed with JOY and my heart is BURSTING with LOVE!

Safe to say that April nailed it! Great work sis.

Enter the #NotOkay Movie

One bold group is now using Tribute to draw attention to an issue that matters: sexual assault. Enter the #NotOkay Movie.

On October 7th a tape was released in which Donald Trump brags about sexually assaulting women. In response, @KellyOxford shared on Twitter her experience being sexually assaulted:

@KellyOxford: “Old man on city bus grabs my ‘p****’ and smiles at me, I’m 12.”

She invited others to share their stories, and within two days over 9 million responded with the hashtag #NotOkay.

The #NotOkay movie is a living collection of these personal stories of sexual assault. Using the Tribute platform, participants record or upload a 20-second video sharing their experience with sexual assault. Together the videos will combine to create the collective #NotOkay movie, which will grow longer and longer as more stories are shared.

“A lot comes up when sharing our stories of sexual assault,” says project lead Dream Mullick. The #NotOkay Movie team wants to provide a safe and powerful way to share our experiences – no matter how big or small.

“If you are ready to share, know that there is no ‘right’ way to share. There is no right or wrong way to BE about this issue. Whoever and wherever you are, your voice matters. Our hurts make us human and all the more lovable. If you’re not ready to share that’s OKAY, too. Know that your voice is part of ours, regardless. When we speak for one we speak for millions.”

Thank you to all those who have shared. Let’s continue for as long as it takes.

If it’s not consensual, then it’s #NotOkay!

Upload your 20-second video on Tribute by Nov 8th. Then share, and invite others.

Gratitude Stories: Spencer’s recovery

We’re honored to introduce Spencer Pickell and his mother Amy for this week’s Gratitude Story.

No parent wants to hear that their child is sick. When Amy discovered that her son Spencer would need high-risk brain surgery, she knew she needed to find a way to remind him to stay strong.

Amy reached out to Tribute a month ago to rally a large group of friends and family members to share some words of support before Spencer’s operation.

Watch the video above to see a community truly show love for their brother in need.

tribute-line screen-shot-2016-10-27-at-3-03-24-pm

Spencer and his mom Amy

Why did you want to give Spencer a Tribute?

Amy (mother): He is my youngest child. His older brother also had two brain surgeries in 2007/8 and he was there at the hospital to support him. We never thought in a million years that nine years later Spencer would be going through the same ordeal. We decided to create a Tribute for Spencer to bolster his spirits and so that he’d have the wind at his back when he was wheeled into the operating room.

What were the circumstances when Spencer received his Tribute? (ie. where, when, how?)

Amy: We played the Tribute video for Spencer at 6:30 in the morning. He lay in his hospital bed at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle waiting to be wheeled down to OR.

What was Spencer’s reaction to the Tribute?

Amy: He was riveted, never taking his eyes off the screen. He couldn’t talk but when he saw my face, his dad’s and brothers faces and his girlfriend’s face on the screen he tapped the screen with a yellow stress ball he was holding in his right hand. At the end of the video there was a still photo of him on the left side of the screen and his girlfriend on the right side of the screen and he tapped the two photos back and forth as if putting him together with his girlfriend.

How did it make you feel?

Amy: I felt we could not have sent Spencer into a high-risk surgery in any better of a mental state. He knew how much he was loved and by so many. I know that on some level the video boosted his will to survive the surgery. There were so many tears in the room.

We’re happy to report that Spencer survivied his surgery and is doing better than expected. We’re sending love and well wishes for a quick and speedy recovery to Spencer and his family. You got this!

Being connected to our community is not just a nice thing to have. Recent research has shown that weak social ties are linked with an impaired immune system, increased inflammation and even depression.

When people are going through difficult times, feeling connected to a community can provide the emotional support they need to stay positive and optimistic.

As always, if you know someone special who deserves to be celebrated, we’re here to help you make it happen.
