Gratitude Stories: Andrew’s 16th Birthday

“At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have ignited the flame within us.”

– Albert Schweitzer

Why did you think it was a good idea for this person to receive a Tribute?

To start off, Tribute gave him the opportunity to see how much he means to everyone.  It was a great way for everyone around him to reflect on what he means to them also! And that is the most amazing thing.

What is your favorite thing about this person?

Andrew has a loving heart, he is not only loved by me but by a lot of people. Andrew is an amazing well-rounded young man!

What were the circumstances when they received their Tribute? (ie. Where, When, How?)

We had his friends over, after a birthday dinner and played it for them.  We also played it for family gatherings for his birthday.

What was their reaction while watching their Tribute?

He was surprised and loved it.  I wasn’t sure if he would appreciate but I think it meant a lot to him.  Everyone enjoyed seeing how everyone contributed in their own unique way.

How did this make you personally feel?

I provided a gift that money can’t buy.  ❤ It meant the world to me to see what he means to everyone.  I never realized he had such a sense of humor!

Please ask the Tribute recipient how it made him/her feel to receive their Tribute.

Andrew loves the little things in life. I knew that making a Tribute for him would be one of the best things he’ll ever receive and that’s exactly what happened. He was so happy. He enjoyed seeing what everyone thought of him.  He was really surprised.

tribute-lineGratitude is the simplest path to a happy life. We’ll be the first to admit that with so much going on each day, it’s so easy to forget. That’s exactly why we created our #GratitudeStories feature. Each week our staff cuts together a one-minute highlight reel from an inspiring Tribute and tells the story behind it. We hope these videos serve as a little reminder to say the nice things in your head and celebrate your friends every single day.

As always, if you know someone special who deserves to be celebrated, we’re here to help you make it happen.

Gratitude Stories: Shea & Stephen’s Wedding

“The goal in marriage is not to think alike, but to think together.”   – Robert C. Dodds photo

We’re thrilled to introduce Taylor for this week’s Gratitude Story. Taylor reached out to commemorate Shea & Stephen before they tied the knot. There’s nothing we enjoy more than filling the happy couple with the love and support of their community before the big day. Enjoy!

Why did you think it was a good idea for this person to receive a Tribute?

Taylor (Friend): Marriage is a gift. It is so special to always be reminded of the gift, you’ll have for a lifetime, and the best way to do it is making another gift as special for them to remember – to remind both of them that they love each other and are loved by everyone around them!

What is your favorite thing about this person?

Taylor: Shea and Stephen are two amazing, fun-loving and goal-oriented individual and now partners to each other and of course as friends to me. A best friend to me for 15 years, Shea (most of the time) positive, always down to do whatever, incredibly caring personality.

What were the circumstances when they received their Tribute? (ie. Where, When, How?)

Taylor (Friend): This Tribute was one of a kind, not only have they received one of the best things in life, which is marriage. But had received another during their wedding reception on 12/30/2016.

How did this make you personally feel?

Taylor (Friend): I am truly overjoyed by the union, Shea and Stephen have been waiting for. Seeing my best friend Shea got married and knowing that she’s loved by a great man, I am absolutely contented and happy.

Please ask the Tribute recipient how it made him/her feel to receive their Tribute.

Taylor (Friend): Shea and Stephen were beyond grateful, shocked, thrilled and felt very loved and touched by the wonderful words.

For this week’s Gratitude Story, we’re pleased to introduce Erin Mercado and her friend, Monica. During Monica’s studies, she quickly distinguished herself as a woman of passion and dedication… just a few of the traits that lead her to become the NRHH Member of the Year. Erin reached out to us to congratulate Monica, and also to show how much of an impact she has contributed to everyone around her.

Why did you think it was a good idea for this person to receive a Tribute?

Erin (Friend and NRHH Member): For context, Monica and I are both involved with student organizations within the residence halls at the college that we both attend. I had the privilege to serve with her on the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) Executive Board last year. I thought that Monica did an outstanding job in her position so I wrote a bid for her. A bid is akin to a fancy nomination presented in a pretty form and can include qualifications, goals, pictures, a theme, and more. Monica’s bid won at the regional level and this past summer it also won on the national level. It is a big deal to win an award at such a high level, but it’s always so hard to bring that recognition back to our campus to share because many of them don’t understand the bidding process. So I thought it would be a good idea for Monica to receive the Tribute to not only congratulate her on her win but to also show our campus members what makes her so great.

What is your favorite thing about this person?

Erin: Monica Maly may be the most caring and selfless person I have ever met. My favorite thing about her is how she is always willing to go above and beyond for anyone she cares about in her life or for any position that she is passionate about. She gives it her all and absolutely nothing can stop her.

What were the circumstances when they received their Tribute? (ie. Where, When, How?)

Erin: Every semester, NRHH hosts a recognition event called OTMmy’s. Many different recognition things occur at this event so we thought it would also be a good idea to present the tribute at this event. Not only were we able to show the people in NRHH that Monica worked with, but we were also able to showcase the tribute to a wider audience within the student leader sphere. It was in the month of November at the end of the event. We also shared the video on our organization’s page.

What was their reaction while watching their Tribute?

Erin: Monica cried and was the star of the night just like we wanted it to be. Everyone that was there that was asked to be a part of the video had a great time recounting in person how great Monica was and how fun making their video was. And even if they weren’t a part of making the video, all the others had a greater understanding of all that Monica did and we’re sure to congratulate her for her win. Monica was all smiles the entire night.

Please ask the Tribute recipient how it made him/her feel to receive their Tribute.

Monica: “I cried a lot. I felt very appreciated and it made me realize that I do make an impact even when I don’t think I do. And doing what I love helps other people find what they love.”
