Who’s had the most fundamental impact on who you are as an individual? Is it a parent, coach, teacher, sibling, or someone unexpected? Tell us about them; they deserve to be recognized!

Open and authentic gratitude is powerful. Imagine watching a video of your friends and loved ones telling you how much you mean to them. Now imagine giving that gift to the most important mentor in your life.

If anyone deserves the Most Meaningful Gift on Earth, it’s the people who go out of their way nurture the success and well-being of others (particularly those in their youth).

Where would you be without the person who’s shaped you the most?

Gratitude Stories: Jack’s 80th Birthday

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”

– Mahatma Gandhi

You are never too old nor too young to celebrate and share why love is forever young. It’s the most extraordinary life has ever provided – knowing that you and I are loved. That’s  exactly what John did for his father-in-law, collaborating with others to give the most meaningful gift on earth. Because…. Why not?

John: Like a million dollars when it was played. Jack called me days later after he went home to view it alone with his wife and was balling crying as he explained how much he appreciated the Tribute and loved me like a son.

John: Jack couldn’t be more grateful for the time and effort each and every one of us put into sharing our feelings about Jack. He said he will watch it over and over.

Gratitude Stories: Kris & Brenna’s Wedding

“Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness, of hatred, of jealousy, and, most easily of all, the gate of fear.”

– Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

We love supporting newlyweds by allowing them to connect with the love and support of their entire community. Everything is easier when we have strong relationships to lean on and lift us up. This week’s gratitude story comes from Pamela, who wanted to do something special for her daughter after the wedding and contacted Tribute to surprise her daughter with something special. Watch the magic that ensues…

Pamela (Brenna’s Mom): This was a tribute from their wedding party, to add to the many wonderful memories this journey created.

What is your favorite thing about this person?

Pamela ( My daughter and new son-in-law are a pleasure to be around – they compliment each other so well, and know how to laugh with each other. They are able to key in on each other’s feelings, and provide strength and extra love when needed. I know that Kris will be there for my daughter, and that provides me with great comfort – knowing that I will not have to worry about her future. I enjoy being with them, and creating special memories.

Pamela: It was very sweet and made us feel loved by everyone that you would take the time to give us such a heartfelt message.

Gratitude Stories: Jimmy’s 52nd Birthday

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.”

-William Arthur Ward

If you feel something nice for someone, share it. We all have an infinite supply of love to give out and if we feel some appreciation for the people around us, why keep it in?    thankful-and-grateful   tribute-line

Why did you think it was a good idea for this person to receive a Tribute?

Lily: Jimmy loves his friends…and does so much for them, that I knew by asking anyone who knows him to submit a Tribute, that they’d be happy to do it and share a few things that they love about him.

tribute-line

tribute-line

What is your favorite thing about this person?

Lily (girlfriend): He’s my significant other!  And he threw me an epic 40th birthday party, so I wanted to create this video to thank him.

What were the circumstances when they received their Tribute? (ie. Where, When, How?)

Lily: I asked his friends to submit a video before Jimmy’s birthday…but as things go, needed to continue to extend the timeline to allow those that I know matter a great deal to him to share their story.  With a bit of follow-up via text, I was able to get about 45 people to contribute a tribute.

What was their reaction while watching their Tribute?

Lily: Jimmy was completely moved to tears…and so appreciative of the effort that each and every contributor made to create this unforgettable gift.

How did this make you personally feel?

Lily: I had so much fun making this video…and don’t think I’ll ever be able to top this!  I loved every minute of the experience and can’t wait to make another video as a wedding gift to friends of mine who are getting married in April.

Please ask the Tribute recipient how it made him/her feel to receive their Tribute.

Straight from his Facebook post to the group:
Jimmy (Jim James) here. There are no words that I can write that can express how wonderful, beautiful, witty, loving and dear to me each of you are. I can tell you that watching this video left me laughing, crying and smiling – simultaneously.

To Lilly, who I love so much, thank you for doing this from the bottom of my heart.

To all my friends and family who submitted messages (or wanted to but didn’t have time), you have made my day, my year, my life. I can ask nothing more in the world than your friendship and love, and I am blown away by your comments and your shared memories. Know that I love you all, and there is nothing else in life I would ever want more than this gift. Life is made so much more precious and wonderful with people like you in it.

I cannot wait to make some more memories with each of you. XOXOXO

Gratitude Stories: Isabella’s 19th Birthday

b2f16d85e656d9087a389b47ee138611

tribute-line

Why did you want to give Isabella a Tribute?

Connie: Giving our daughter a Tribute was so incredibly awesome because this was her very first birthday away from home. Although she is loving life in college and says is not homesick, as a Mom, it was not easy having her so far away on her birthday and I thought that if just in case she did feel a little homesick on her birthday, she might cheer up by watching some video greetings from all the important people in her life!

tribute-line
tribute-line

What is your favorite thing about this person?

Connie (mom): My favorite things about Isabella are that she is just an overall really, really kind person and she has a smile that just lights up every room — especially those who know her or meet her for the first time. She is a very giving and compassionate person and she always tells me she loves me!!

What were the circumstances when they received their Tribute?

Connie: Isabella was in college in her dorm room when she opened up her Tribute!!!!!!

What was their reaction while watching their Tribute?

Connie: I wish I could have seen her reaction but since she watched it a thousand miles away from me, I can only tell you that her immediate text to me read, “Best. Present. Ever!!!!! (Accompanied with a lot of happy emojis). She said she watched it with a friend and then alone so she could digest it all. She said it made her cry!!!! Tears of joy, of course! She marveled at how some of her new college friends participated also, in addition to her high school friends and their birthday wishes for her and their insight into her, including their favorite memories of her, made her so, so HAPPY!!!!! Best. Present. Ever!!!

How did this make you personally feel?

Connie: Like the kids say, “OMG!!!!” — I totally enjoyed hearing the heartfelt messages her old and new friends gave her. For me, it was so joyful to hear how much her friends love her and listen to them recount their favorite memories of her. What was an added bonus was to hear them lovingly and teary-eyed list all her wonderful qualities that make her such a special friend to them. I know how special our daughter is, but it was such a treat to hear her friends put into words how they truly feel about her. These kids were extremely thoughtful in their messages/wishes to her. It made me proud that she associates with such beautiful people and it made me so incredibly happy to hear her be so thankful for this gift. It also delighted me that she had such a happy 19th birthday away from home with new friends but because of Tribute, she also celebrated with family and old friends too! The Tribute videos made her birthday extra special!!

Please ask the Tribute recipient how it made him/her feel to receive their Tribute.

Isabella says it made her so happy! I guess friends don’t always tell each other why exactly they love and appreciate their friendship or what traits/values of theirs are what drew/draws them to her. That made her feel so special but also gave her an opportunity to connect with all on an even deeper level. The video montage also contained some random video messages from kids Isabella has babysat for in the past and from the ladies at her favorite nail salon so she said the overall Tribute was meaningful but also very funny! Again, in her words, she says that receiving this Tribute on her 19th birthday was “THE BEST PRESENT EVER!!!!!”

Tribute Sells Tears of Joy

The following article by Emma Allen is cross-posted from The New Yorker’s April 18th, 2016 issue.

The other day, Andrew Horn sat on a red exercise ball in his startup’s Williamsburg office, a tricked-out former garage, and explained why he was trying to sell people on the idea of creating eulogies for the living. “I spoke at the Burning Man TEDx two years ago, and the talk was called ‘We Got the Eulogy Wrong,’ ” he said. In a video of the address, he can be seen wearing gold shorts and a Sgt. Pepper jacket, saying, “If we look at the word ‘eulogy,’ it comes from the ancient Greek word eulogia, and eulogia simply means ‘praise.’ ” The desire to be present at one’s own funeral is nothing new. In an era of near-constant mutual affirmation—pause here to check the number of likes on your most recent selfie—why let a little thing like death stand in the way?

In Brooklyn, Horn, who wore a fedora and an enormous gray scarf, launched into the origin story of Tribute, a “living eulogy” video-compilation service that he co-founded last year. (The company’s slogan: “The most meaningful gift on earth.”) When Horn turned twenty-seven, his girlfriend, Miki Agrawal—the C.E.O. of Thinx period underwear—asked his friends and relatives to send her one-minute clips explaining why they loved the birthday boy. She screened them at a surprise party. “I’m sitting there and I see my mom telling me how proud of me she is,” Horn, who is now twenty-nine, said. “And I remember wanting to cry? And holding it back at first. And then I was, like, just let it go.” He bawled for twenty minutes.

Tribute’s precursors include the roast and the Festschrift. Its Web site offers a variety of ways to put together a video montage: for twenty-five dollars, you can make one yourself; for a hundred and twenty-five dollars, a “concierge” will e-mail friends a list of prompts (“What do you admire about Jerry?”), teach them how to film themselves, and edit the love-fest for you. For even more money, Tribute will bring in professional producers and editors. The initial funding (more than eight hundred thousand dollars) came from Kickstarter and angel investors. Horn hopes that Tribute will become the “Hallmark of video messaging”—an industry that he estimates will be worth twenty-seven billion dollars by 2022. (Tribute’s competitors include ThankView video cards and Ditty, which converts text messages into music videos.)

160418_r28024web-1200x900-1460150491

Horn grew up in Hawaii, and planned to go into “night-life stuff,” until, at the age of twenty-two, he had an epiphany—he wanted to help people. He founded a nonprofit that gets children with disabilities involved in sports, then started a sort of Craigslist for the disabled. He met Agrawal on a Summit Series cruise. (“It’s like a modern-day Davos for young creatives,” Horn said.) Four years ago, at Burning Man, they were married, by the Reverend Funk Pocket, on the Bridge to Nowhere. He met Rory Petty, a software engineer and Tribute’s co-founder, in the gym of the condo building in Williamsburg where they both live. “Andrew is the wild yin to my let’s-just-stay-on-the-couch-and-watch-Netflix yang,” Petty said, at Tribute’s office. He wore a sweater with elbow patches.

More than thirteen thousand people have made Tribute videos. Users tend to be female (sixty per cent), and between the ages of eighteen and forty. To watch a number of the videos back to back is to get the sense that the world suffers from a glut of best dads; that humans have yet to comprehend that their most flattering angle is not from below; and that everyone’s apartment is furnished with at least one item from IKEA.

From “Steve’s 60th Birthday”: “You are sixty years of vintage awesomeness and goodness.” From “Who Loves Dr. Nandi?”: “He truly, truly just wants to make the world a better place by encouraging everyone to be their own health hero.” From “Coach Lucy Tribute”: “Thank you for teaching me, um, how to skate backwards faster and shoot better.” From “College Graduation Tribute”: “I miss having our little dance parties! I’m so lonely! Don’t leave me! Just kidding.” The final product can be delivered digitally or on a bamboo thumb drive.

Petty said, “We’ve had people do virtual baby showers from Australia. We’ve had virtual bachelor and bachelorette parties.” They’ve done corporate-recognition videos and a video for a guy who was going to prison for financial malfeasance. At least one Tribute video has been a eulogy in the traditional sense. This was for Dan Fredinburg, an early investor in the company who worked at Google X. Last year, Fredinburg died while climbing Mt. Everest, and hours of footage poured in, which the team cut down to a highlight reel.

Will Correa-Munoz, a Tribute employee, popped out an earbud and told the story of a video he’d made for a friend’s college graduation. He recalled, “Honestly, our type of relationship is, like, ‘bro’—you know, we make fun of each other and stuff. But when he put the U.S.B. in his computer he just started crying. He was hugging me!”

Tribute tracks what Horn and Petty call the “T.O.J. statistic”—“eighty per cent of people reported crying tears of joy,” Horn said. “I can show you the SurveyMonkey right now.”

Gratitude Stories: Norma’s 95th Birthday

As the people we love grow older, it is inevitable that they will lose touch with many of the people who have held a special place in their hearts.

One of the most powerful gifts we can give the elderly is a moment of connection with the friends and family they don’t see often.

We love seeing the children of elderly parents on Tribute. Karl’s Tribute for his 95-year-old mom is a great example of how powerful these videos can be. We hope you enjoy this week’s Gratitude Story!

if you don't have anything nice to say, say it.png

tribute-line

Why did you want to give Norma a Tribute?

Karl (son): She has lost direct touch with many folks who loved & respected her. This was an ideal way for them to speak directly to her, rather than writing their sentiments in a card or letter.

What is your favorite thing about Norma?

Karl: Over the years, she has taught me so much and shared so much wisdom. My favorite thing about her is her Patience.

What were the circumstances when Norma received her Tribute?

In a relaxed, quiet setting on a Sunday afternoon, we played her Tribute on a large screen TV while she sat in a comfortable chair surrounded by her family.

What was their reaction to the Tribute?

She was overcome with emotion, quietly crying several times.

How did this make you personally feel?

Karl: Thankful for the time people took to send a video, and thankful that they could personally speak directly to her heart in this way.

Did Norma have anything to say after watching her Tribute?

Karl: It was so emotional, she was left without words. She managed to utter a few words and phrases: Wonderful – amazing – so loved – thank you.

Gratitude Stories: Gabrielle’s Graduation

Life is made up of milestones, and graduation is one of the biggest. There are few occasions that allow you to consider the growth and development of a human quite like a graduation.

For the graduate, it can be a time of excitement, and also uncertainty. That is one of the reasons why it is so important to fill a young person up with the support of their community. When someone feels like they have a crew of people at their back, they are more likely to believe in their dreams and go for what they want most.

We love seeing family and friend come together to share their appreciation and congratulations for recent grads. Dana’s Tribute for Gabrielle is a great example of how beautiful these graduation Tributes can be. Enjoy this week’s Gratitude Story.

Why did you want to give Gabrielle a Tribute?

Dana (aunt): Because reaching major milestone in one’s life is a moment to celebrate, rejoice and be noticed for the great accomplishment that it is. Receiving a Tribute is a beautiful gift. All too often we neglect to tell the people we love and admire just how special they are. A Tribute video forces you in a the best of ways to dig deep and really express wonderful emotions about your loved one.

Young Gabrielle enjoys the company of her aunt Dana

What is your favorite thing about Gabrielle?

Dana: There are so many things. She is sweet and polite, bright and good natured. Full of love.

What were the circumstances when Gabrielle received her Tribute?

Dana: We were all on a family vacation celebrating Gabrielle’s graduation. On the last night that we had all our family together sitting in the living room of the rented beach house, we played the video.

What was their reaction to the Tribute?

Dana: We laughed and cried and remembered good times together as she was growing up and now as a beautiful young woman about to embark on her adult life.

How did this make you personally feel?

Dana: I was grateful for the opportunity that Tribute afforded me to bring this special gift to her. I was glad I was able to pull it together for her. It was a very emotional experience for all of us to say the least.

Did Gabrielle have anything to say after watching her Tribute?

Dana: She said she loved it and it made her feel loved and good about herself. She felt empowered to take on this next chapter in her life… And she really is.
